The Catalan national team, which is not officially recognized by FIFA, will play a friendly match against Venezuela in Girona on 25th of March. Legendary players such as Xavi and Fabregas are called up. Moreover, FC Barcelona players Gerard Pique and Carles Alena will play too. Gerard Pique has retired from Spain national team following the disappointment World Cup tournament last summer, however is continuing his international career as Catalan player.

Interestingly, Alena, as well as La Masia graduates Bojan Krkic and Alex Moreno, are already set to play against Venezuela. Among other players mentioned on the list are former Barca stars Xavi and Cesc Fabregas. By calling up these players the Catalan national football selection partly reenacts the legendary Spanish team of 2008-2010, that sought immense success in international football.

The president of the Catalan Soccer Federation, Joan Soteras, explained that "after three years of not having a Catalonia match we managed to organize it and do it on FIFA date. It will be more than a match against Venezuela, and we appreciate the effort being made by the City Council, Girona FC and the Generalitat de Catalunya. I also thank the good coach we have, Gerard López, because we will have a very competitive team against a very good opponent. I want the citizens of Girona and all the federated people in the area, above all, to come and fill Montilivi. We will work to see it full."

It is worth noting that, differently from usual national team matches, the tickets to this match are very cheap – only 10 euros for the best seats in the stadium. This will surely be in interesting fixture.
